AGUSTÍ FERNÁNDEZ & SÒNIA SÁNCHEZ «Agua brotando de una piedra negra»
8:30pm – Conde Duque Contemporary Culture Centre
Agustí Fernández is our most universal free improviser. This Majorcan pianist, with a wealth of experience alongside such luminaries as Peter Kowald, Barry Guy or Evan Parker, believes that there are major differences between free jazz and musical improvisation, and says that the former comes from the US tradition. On the contrary, free music comes from the European classical tradition.
Agustí has also received numerous awards, including the “Premi Nacional de Cultura” from the Generalitat de Catalunya in 2013.
A professional since the age of thirteen, pianist Agustí Fernández has been the director and co-founder of the Orquesta del Caos and the IBA Collective (Improvisadors de Barcelona), alongside Joan Saura and Liba Villaviecchia. He was the first Spanish musician to participate in an album released by the prestigious ECM label, thanks to his participation in the album Memory/Vision by the Evan Parker Electro-Acoustic Ensemble, a group he has been a member of since 2002, and he was also the first teacher of improvisation at the Escuela Superior de Música de Barcelona.
