André Breton once wrote that art never ended, if it did it would not exist. If this axiom is accepted, then the works of David Peña Dorantes are unequivocally art. This pianist is an irreducible creator who has always remained true to his musical commitments throughout all the years that have passed since he first appeared in public. His flamenco music, born from tradition and flowing into inventiveness, is like an unleashed spring, it gives you the feeling that you are witnessing creation in the exact moment it is being produced.
A gypsy from Lebrija, near Seville, grandson of the “cantaora” (flamenco singer) La Perrata, son of guitarist Pedro Peña and nephew of El Lebrijano, David has an extremely important musical career. He studied piano, harmony and composition at the Seville Conservatoire of Music and, later on, once he released his first album “Orobroy”, he began to travel all over the world, taking his flamenco piano to countless stages and festivals.
Dorantes is now bringing his show “El Tiempo por Testigo” (Time as a Witness) to JAZZMADRID. The material we will hear can be found in an album he published in 2017 under the same name, and in the concert we will also enjoy the two excellent musicians who support him in the rhythm section, with considerable experience in the world of flamenco. If Arturo Pavón forged a definitive place for piano in flamenco music, and José Romero consolidated it with his mastery, Dorantes’ piano moves the styles even further forward.
