The most refreshing proposals have been given their own space in JAZZMADRID with several concerts. One of them is the one offered by this trio, formed by drummer Lucía Martínez, double bass player Baldo Martínez and sax player Juan Sáiz.
With Lucía Martínez drums have a woman’s name. She started off with lessons with Cuban percussionist Marcos Valcárcel; then she immersed herself in those communicating vessels through which jazz and world music summon musicians from all over the country. Studying, getting ready and traveling are indispensable tasks, and Lucia’s schools have been in London, Helsinki, Lisbon and Berlin. And also in recording studios these past few years, where she has recorded several albums. One of them is the project she is presenting now under the name “Frágil Gigante” (Fragile Giant).
The recording features a couple of fundamental partners: double bass player Baldo Martínez and Juan Sáiz. Baldo is like a Galician Dave Holland but he’s beginning to look more and more like Barry Guy, who is also in this festival’s line-up by the way, alongside Agustí Fernández and Torben Snekkestad. The adventure is completed by Juan Sáiz, a young musician from Cantabria who deserves every ounce of attention he gets, as the Italian Jazz Magazine said recently.
Multicoloured and unpredictable jazz, with a flowing three-sided dialogue encouraged by the unstoppable engine of improvisation. A superb example of expressive individuality that can only be replicated by collective improvisation. Music from tomorrow that, just like everything these people do, individually and together, is still playing today.
