Apart from the occasional contributions of Raúl Márquez and Diego Galaz, the violin in our jazz music has found a unique performer in this teacher from the School of Creative Music. Although she has Korean roots, Maureen Choi was born in Michigan, USA. She began playing at the age of three, and since then she has won many awards and she has played with orchestras from the USA, Europe and Asia.
She studied classical music at Michigan State University, and she discovered jazz and improvisation at the Berklee College of Boston. Kanye West, Larry Harlow or Rodney Whitaker, among others, have fond memories of her work as a violinist in their bands. Maureen Choi’s first album was published in 2011. Two years later she released “Valentía” (Courage) alongside trombone player Ed Byrne and then, in 2014, “Ida y Vuelta” (There and Back) arrived, together with the musicians of her regular quartet, Daniel García on piano, Mario Carrillo on double bass and Michael Olivera on drums.
In the creations of Maureen Choi, jazz is blended with astonishing naturality with European chamber music and Latin-American music. Maureen has also worked in film, recording the soundtrack for the 2014 movie, “A Night in Old Mexico”, and in addition to her work at the EMC, she holds a teaching position at Berklee College’s campus in Valencia. At JAZZMADRID, she will be presenting her fourth album, “Theia”.
