ALA.NI is the stage name of British singer Alani Charal. ALA.NI brings to the stage all the sophistication she obtains from her artistic connection with the world of fashion. After having worked as a backup singer for Damon Albarn (Blur), Andrea Bocelli, Mary J. Blige and Benjamin Clementine, a couple of years ago she decided she was going to make it on her own in the first person singular and that the time had come to vindicate herself as a different singer in a new jazz scene.
Some people think she’s the worthy heiress to the singing style of Billie Holiday, but in her creative work ALA.NI doesn’t hide the fact that she admires other voices too. Judy Garland, Julie Andrews and the iconic Joni Mitchell, for example. In her 2016 début album, “You & I”, she was able to call on Andrew Hale, a former collaborator of Sade, to produce some of her songs that cleverly mix romantic swing ballads with contemporary soul. The album is made up of four EPs, each named after a season of the year.
A grandniece of Leslie Hutchinson, a cabaret supernova from the twenties, ALA.NI has built her own musical universe. Although jazz features in that universe, it’s by no means central to her work, rather it acts as an integrating element for other cultures akin to black music. The sound she puts together is full of definitive beauty and truth.
