One of the most interesting drummers who emerged with the birth of the millennium. Mexican Antonio Sánchez, seasoned from touring and recording albums with the Pat Metheny Group, Luciana Souza and Gary Burton, visits JAZZMADRID accompanied by the musicians of Migration, his favourite band for the last few years.
A Grammy Award winner on four occasions, Sanchez studied at the National Conservatory in Mexico from where he quickly moved on to Berklee College and the New England Conservatory. In those last two institutions he acquired the defining skills for which he is recognized by all his fans today. A work dynamic that allows him to play with great rhythmic complexity, while at the same time clearly expressing, if the occasion so requires, the most delicate melodic nuances.
“New life”, one of his most important albums, balances complexity and emotion, intellect and soul. On the album notes, Pat Metheny refers to Antonio as “my main collaborator for the past 13 years.” A courtesy to which the drummer quickly responded by stating that his years working with the guitarist remain at the very heart of his inspiration; not just in a musical sense, but also in terms of work ethic and collaboration.
