A man attached to a trumpet. That’s Avishai Cohen, revealing himself to the ears of his audience as an insatiable devourer of all kinds of music. JAZZMADRID has invited him to play with his quartet, following his tour during the summer months when he was accompanied by a somewhat unusual instrumental combination of a double duo of guitar and drums.
Reminiscent of Miles Davis at his the coolest, Avishai is a clean performer with a centred balance, and it is surprising that, since the times of Triveny, he’s had such success among very young audiences, who identify him as a hipster trumpeter. None of his colleagues has on display a trophy as unusual as having served as a healer of the effects of techno music in after parties. His trumpet speaks gently, one to one, to the individual. He always attends to reason and he never imposes himself by force.
So many confluent singularities could only produce one even greater singularity, which ended up convincing many fans. In 2016, Avishai was confirmed by Jazz Magazine France as “Best Foreign Artist”, while “Into the Silence”, his debut album as the leader of ECM, obtained splendid reviews from the critics at Jazz Times. And the same reviews have been published by other specialised publications around the world.
