Together with Tony Williams, Billy Cobham is the most popular drummer in jazz-rock. Frequently seen in Miles Davies’ electric bands and before that in the Horace Silver Quintet and, later on, in the Mahavishnu Orchestra and in Spectrum, Cobham has spent many years searching for hidden corners in the sound of his powerful instrument. He has particularly dedicated himself to the use of resources which come from other percussion techniques well removed from jazz, and he has used these techniques to build his own open rhythmic edifice.
As a composer, Billy Cobham proposes an internal journey full of geographical suggestions, strung together by a storyline that traces the complex rhythmic calligraphy which he uncovers in each project. As an interpreter, Billy Cobham, on the other hand, is the happy prolongation of the author, tying together ideas in the time and place in which they are born.
During these past few years he has been revisiting his old conquests and then presenting them to his audiences in a suitably revamped way. The fourth album of the series in which he evokes the memory of his parents, “Fruits from the Loom”, is already a reality. As is “Crosswinds”, a recreation of what was his second album for Atlantic, in 1974. Much of all this, along with added surprises, will be presented on stage.
