Some years ago, the specialised press presented Christian Scott as the last link in a dynasty of trumpeters that began in his hometown of New Orleans more than a century ago, with legends like Joe King Oliver and Louis Armstrong. His appearance in the NBA gala in 2008 alongside a team of All Stars that included Harry Connick Jr., Branford Marsalis and the late, great Dr John, among others, only served to confirm the hypothesis.
Many loving hands have worked away in the background during Christian Scott’s education, and possibly the most important were those of his uncle, saxophonist Donald Harrison. Scott aims high in his aspirations. He’s aiming at Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Eldridge… And, above all, Miles Davis.
Like him, Christian Scott also considers that above and beyond the ability to impress an audience with sterile virtuosity, the important thing is to really communicate what you want them to feel. Tonight, he will appear, as he did three years ago, at the head of his active band. They will present the album “Ancestral Recall” which is brimming with music that, from a jazz perspective, finds its initial and initiatory roots in percussion. A rich testimony of Afro-Amerindian syncretism, so characteristic of New Orleans.
