“Flamenco Trane” is the tribute that Guillermo McGill wanted to make, from jazz and flamenco, to John Coltrane. In his mind, the drummer spent years fantasizing about bringing the worlds of jazz and flamenco together on the same stage, in the same show, using the work of saxophonist John Coltrane as a cohesive element.
The show premièred with great success in the Teatro Central in Seville, and it’s now visiting this festival with all engines roaring and a band that is fully in tune with the project. As the performance progresses, fans will be able to see how Coltrane’s flexible way with styles, with free jazz, hard-bop or indeed his highly sensitive approach to ballads, intersect with flamenco and jazz, until they finally achieve a concert devoid of reference points.
And the fact is that not only is Guillermo McGill our greatest drummer, he is also a musician who meditates on the reasons that inspire his compositions. Many of them are dedicated to a world that forgets its true heroes all too soon. Since his début with “Dreams and Time” (“Los Sueños y el Tiempo”), dedicated to María Zambrano, Guillermo has never stopped vindicating those artists that he considers to be crucial. Jon Sobrino, Joe Zawinul and now, Coltrane.
