It’s been a little more than 25 years since singer Mina Agossi was given an impressive niche in traditional jazz by the British swing scene. She took advantage of it, however, to install herself in a musical aesthetic that was more in keeping with her temperament and forms. That aesthetic is none other than the sensational expansive wave of cutting-edge jazz, conveniently seasoned with blues and rock and not forgetting a sparkling pinch or two of reggae. French singer Mina Agossi is a part of that percentage of performers who will play jazz in a female key in this festival.

With her accessible style, Mina’s creations focus on classical vocalists from today’s perspective. The artistic attitudes by Bjork, the style of Billie Holiday and abrasive covers of songs by Monk and Hendrix have culminated in repertoires that are brilliantly complemented by her tingling group which includes keyboards and drums. A formulation which would appear to be as far as you can possibly get from the devastatingly lyrical solo style that characterises Italian pianist Giovanni Guidi, who in the work that he is now presenting before us, dedicated to French singer-songwriter Leo Ferre, reaches thrilling heights. After his debut with trumpetist Enrico Rava, and after having played with Thomas Morgan, Gianluca Petrella, the Unknown Rebel Band or his own trio, Guidi visits JAZZMADRID the way he likes best: with a solo piano concert.
