JAZZMADRID offers its hand and a space to pianist Myra Melford, one of the most original creators in that frontier territory where jazz and improvised music meet. Myra is a top-notch agitator and an intelligent musician, one of those people who reinvent themselves in New York’s havens of free contemporary music, after having started her journey at the AACM in Chicago where she formed Equal Interest, a trio that included Leroy Jenkins and Joseph Jarman.
She moved to New York in the early eighties, and she published her debut album as headliner in 1990. Since then, she has published more than thirty albums, and she has appeared as a collaborator in at least another sixty or so. She has had some exceptional musical experiences and some of the most important ones that come to mind are her collaborations in the bands of Henry Threadgill, Butch Morris and Fred Frith.
Myra Melford’s music is nonconformist and suggestive, it has a sharp, piercing edge, but her determination doesn’t end by leaving conventional versification out of her discourse. Behind the turbulent appearance of many of her compositions there is a vivid, uninhibited and very free prose. Together with Sylvie Courvoisier, she is one of the leading lights of genuinely avant-garde contemporary piano.
