Among the many trends currently breathing new life into jazz, one of the most vigorous is the one that resorts to electronic music as its inspiration. Hundreds of recordings from the north of Europe are alternating between technology and jazz in different proportions. Time flies, but one name still stands head and shoulders above the rest in this new batch of musicians: Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer.
Molvaer’s compositions, permeated by exquisite echoes of Jon Hassell and Brian Eno, also fly the flag of Bill Laswell’s rhythmic inventions and some of the experiments Miles Davis laid down in the twilight of his career. He visited JAZZMADRID two years ago with Sly & Robbie, a duo of musicians from Jamaica. We thought now was the right time to enjoy a new concert by this trumpeter and his band.
Backed by a rhythmic section that’s always more than willing to break the inertia, Molvaer will once again amaze his audience with his trumpet solos. And it won’t be an easy task to find better moments in this musician’s recording career than those that inspire his most recent album which he is currently presenting. Ethereal passages, filled with a strange beauty, that kindle the hopes of those fans who eagerly await a true regeneration of jazz.
