A few years ago he was one of the leading promises in contemporary jazz, albeit together with Robert Glasper and Jason Moran; today he is an absolute reality. Winner of the prestigious European Jazz Prize in Vienna in 2007, Stefano Bollani is one of the stars in JAZZMADRID.
Now 45 years-of-age, Bollani’s artistic background includes Lorenzo Cherubini “Jovanotti”, Raf, or even Laura Pausini, although he owes his fame to his 1996 alliance with trumpeter Enrico Rava. This detail hasn’t stopped him from sharing musical ideas and stages with some of the greatest figures in jazz: Phil Woods, Lee Konitz, Michel Portal, Pat Metheny, Richard Galliano and Gato Barbieri, among others.
To delve just a little further into the world of this peculiar character, we suggest that anyone interested should venture into a virtual library and search for “L’America di Renato Carosone”, published in 2004. This history of Carosone – the person whom Bellani always quotes as being responsible for his having taken up his trade – completes this urgent snapshot of the artist.
He now comes to Madrid with the same musicians with whom he recently recorded “Que Bom”, an album whose explicit Brazilian inspiration continues the ideas first laid down in “Carioca” and “O Qué Será”, from 2008 and 2013 respectively.
