The musical credo of this trio seamlessly incorporates grunge and rock classics, pop covers and jazz standards, in a process akin to that of such other trios as Medeski, Martin & Wood, or the trio led by double bass player Avishai Cohen. The Bad Plus are pianist Orrin Evans (originally known as Ethan Iverson), double bass player Reid Anderson, and drummer David King; three American musicians who were not only born and raised in the Midwest but also share a reciprocal fascination for each other’s individual careers, with CVs that tell of in-depth individual experience in bands led by Dave Douglas, Bobby Watson, Mark Turner, Ron Miles and Anthony Cox, among others.
Published in the summer of 2001, their first album, “The Bad Plus”, included humorous updates of compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach, Rodgers & Hart and Abba. Since then The Bad Plus have continued to add to this eclectic repertoire, by publishing new albums, highly diverse compositions of their own, as well as covers of songs by Prince, the Bee Gees, Kraftwerk, Ornette Coleman and Nirvana, as well as some pieces by 20th century classical composers such as Igor Stravinsky or Milton Babbit. Their proposal seems firmly decided to bury the back catalogues of Rodgers & Hammerstein and Co. in our memory.
