Considered by many to be the greatest guitar player in Spain, it’s been over three decades since Ximo Tébar headed up a band of his own. Since then, he has tirelessly built up a career that has always had room for evolution and a host of distinguished bands. Among these, Lou Bennett stands out as a fundamental cornerstone.
Bennett introduced him in France as a “new guitar talent”. And he wasn’t wrong. Basing himself on such models as Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Grant Green and Pat Martino, Ximo Tébar has developed a style that, apart from being the base for many of his own albums, has allowed him to share experiences with Johnny Griffin, Joey de Francesco, Jorge Pardo and Tete Montoliú.
His music has been described as jazz from mare nostrum and, far from denying it, this Valencian guitarist has done nothing but prove the legitimacy of this tag. Back in 1995 he published an album called “Son Mediterráneo”, and now, following “Soleo” in 2016, he is set on reaffirming the same intentions with “Con Alma & United”, an album that was reviewed at length last June in “Downbeat”, that bible of American jazz, and that he is now presenting to us.
