She is another of the artists who best represent the process of tailoring jazz to today’s reality. A question that, in the case of vocalists, is usually solved by adapting it to pop music to a greater or lesser extent, a habit that nostalgic fans of bebop and hard-bop witness with unease. A big mistake. These aesthetic mutations have become commonplace in the long trajectory of jazz, although, due to a problem of proximity, it has always been hard to recognise them.
Youn Sun Nah makes the process very simple. From Seoul, where she was born, to Paris, where she finally settled, the artist has done nothing but grow, artistically speaking. Her album “She Moves On” -the ninth of her ten albums- was well received here in 2017. By then, the US market was already demanding her presence. In this sense, she appears quite frequently on our stages, hence her visiting JAZZMADRID.
Youn Sun Nah will be presenting her album “Immersion”. Thirteen songs sculpted by Clément Ducol, Melody Gardot’s music arranger, followed by songs from authors of the stature of Marvin Gaye, Michel Legrand or Isaac Albéniz. And, to round of the selection, a canon from Leonard Cohen: “Hallelujah”. Everything quite impeccable.
